10 Things the Food Industry Doesn't Want You to Know
Nutrition experts argue that you can’t take marketing campaigns at face value.

By Adam Voiland and Angela Haupt March
Angela Haupt is an editor with the Health and Wellness section at U.S. News. You can follow her on Twitter, connect with her on LinkedIn, circle her on Google+ or email her at ahaupt@usnews.com.

Bigger, juicier, saltier, sweeter, crunchier. Most of all, more. The food industry and its nonstop marketing has been tabbed by many experts as a major player in the obesity epidemic. "The result of constant exposure to today's 'eat more' food environment," write Marion Nestle and Malden Nesheim in their upcoming book Why Calories Count, "has been to drive people to desire high-calorie foods and to become 'conditioned overeaters.'"

David Ludwig, a pediatrician and coauthor of a commentary published in 2008 in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) that raised questions about whether big food companies can be trusted to help combat obesity. Ultimately, he has argued, makers of popular junk foods have an obligation to stockholders to maximize profits, which means encouraging consumers to eat more—not less—of a company's products. Health experts including Ludwig and Nestle, a professor of nutrition at New York University, both of whom have long histories of tracking the food industry, spoke with U.S. News and highlighted 10 things that junk food makers don't want you to know about their products and how they promote them. Here's a peek behind the curtain:

Junk food makers spend billions advertising unhealthy foods to kids.

More processing means more profits, but typically makes food less healthy.

Less-processed foods are generally more filling than their highly processed counterparts. Fresh apples have an abundance of fiber and nutrients that are lost when they are processed into applesauce.

A health claim on the label doesn't necessarily make a food healthy.

Food industry pressure has made nutritional guidelines confusing for consumers.

The food industry works aggressively to discredit its critics.

"Pink slime" is on its way out—but it's not gone. Ground meat is commonly bulked up with what critics call "pink slime," butchering scraps that have been cleansed with ammonia.

Introducing Genetically modified organism

Genetically Modified Food Organism Defined

From Wikipedia .org we the following definition of genetically modified foods;

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia For related content, see genetic engineering, genetically modified organism, genetically modified crops, and genetically modified food controversies. Genetically modified foods (or GM foods) are foods produced from organisms that have had specific changes introduced into their DNA using the methods of genetic engineering. These techniques have allowed for the introduction of new crop traits as well as a far greater control over a food's genetic structure than previously afforded by methods such as selective breeding and mutation breeding.[1] Commercial sale of genetically modified foods began in 1994, when Calgene first marketed its Flavr Savr delayed ripening tomato.[2] To date most genetic modification of foods have primarily focused on cash crops in high demand by farmers such as soybean, corn, canola, and cotton seed oil. These have been engineered for resistance to pathogens and herbicides and better nutrient profiles. GM livestock have also been experimentally developed, although as of November 2013 none are currently on the market.[3] There is broad scientific consensus that food on the market derived from GM crops poses no greater risk to human health than conventional food.[4][5][6][7][8][9]

However, opponents have objected to GM foods on several grounds,

including safety issues, environmental concerns, and economic concerns raised by the fact that GM seeds (and potentially animals) that are food sources are subject to intellectual property rights owned by multinational corporations - see Genetically modified food controversies

no GMO foods
The influx of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) into the West Africa subregion poses a grave and growing threat. Yet Ghana’s domestic national policy is very receptive to US influence, which is strongly pro-GMO. Furthermore, the close and growing political and diplomatic ties between Ghana and Togo extend this pro-GMO influence into Togo.

Articles about Health Risks by Jeffrey Smith

Biography: Jeffrey M. Smith has been involved with genetically modified (GM) foods for nearly a decade. He worked for non-profit and political groups on the issue and in 1998, ran for U.S. Congress to raise public awareness of the health and environmental impacts. To protect children-who are most at risk from the potential health effects of GM foods-Smith proposed legislation to remove the foods from school meals. He also proposed legislation to help protect farmers from cross-pollination by GM crops. Later, he was vice president of marketing for a GMO detection laboratory.

The Importances of the Immune System

Immune system From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The immune system is a system of biological structures and processes within an organism that protects against disease.
To function properly, an immune system must detect a wide variety of agents, from viruses to parasitic worms, and distinguish them from the organism's own healthy tissue. In many species, the immune system can be classified into subsystems, such as the innate immune system versus the adaptive immune system, or humoral immunity versus cell-mediated immunity.

Immune system defined by Wikipedia

from kids health.org we have the following .. read more
The immune system, which is made up of special cells, proteins, tissues, and organs, defends people against germs and microorganisms every day. In most cases, the immune system does a great job of keeping people healthy and preventing infections. But sometimes problems with the immune system can lead to illness and infection. About the Immune System
The immune system is the body's defense against infectious organisms and other invaders. Through a series of steps called the immune response, the immune system attacks organisms and substances that invade body systems and cause disease.

from How Stuff Works.com .. read on The immune system is complex, intricate and interesting. And there are at least two good reasons for you to know more about it. First, it is just plain fascinating to understand where things like fevers, hives, inflammation, etc., come from when they happen inside your own body. You also hear a lot about the immune system in the news as new parts of it are understood and new drugs come on the market -- knowing about the immune system makes these news stories understandable. In this article, we will take a look at how your immune system works so that you can understand what it is doing for you each day, as well as what it is not.

Reviews

There are many reviews of this product here is one from the Amazon site;
you wont believe how miraculous this product is until you try it. i have been searching for years for a supplement that really boosts your immune system....nothing ever helped. somebody recommended wellness formula to me. i was very skeptical but tried it...and i have never been sick even once since. the good thing is that you dont even need to take this regularly...just take a few megadoses when you feel you are getting sick...the effect is virtually instant. i tend to get pretty nasty cough when i catch a cold...so recently my throat was already itchy, i felt tired and i had a cough...i took 10 tablets over the course of a day...the next morning, EVERYTHING was gone!

Principle 2: SuperFoods are whole foods.
There will always be some disagreement regarding the
term wholefood. But in general, whole foods are those
that are unprocessed or are minimally processed in such
a way that none of their nutritional characteristics
have been intentionally modified.

Whole foods are complex. They contain hundreds
of unidentified compounds and nutrients.
A growing body of research from laboratory and
human studies suggests that these nutrients work
best in concert with each other.
Moreover, just as the nutrients in a particular
food team up to work better, nutrients from a
wide range of foods also work together to
promote good health.

10 top reasons to scratch-cook

Here’s the kicker: You have to learn to cook.

Health. Home-cooked food is healthier than convenience meals. You control what goes into your body. You select the fresh, organic, seasonal, grassfed or other preferred ingredients. You measure the oil, salt, sugar and cream in each recipe. And scratch-cooked meals don’t—by definition—include commercially processed items. So you’re assured the fat molecules in your olive oil haven’t been re-arranged in a lab, heated to Inferno-esque temperatures and injected with dubiously stable hydrogen. Your sauces, pastas, condiments and desserts aren’t loaded with high fructose corn syrup. And the flavor of your dishes comes from real food, not test tube-created texturizers, enhancers, emulsifiers and preservatives. When you select and cook food with your own hands, you eliminate a load of known—and unknown–food dangers.

Organic Facts.net

Our Goal
Consumers regularly search for detailed unbaised information on organic food (and food in general) so that they can make educated decisions while shopping. Farmers, producers and suppliers, on the onther hand, constantly seek best practices prevalent in different parts of the world so that they can improve the quality of their products and efficiency of their production methods. Organic Facts aims at meeting these demands from the buyers and sellers by providing facts on different aspects of organic living, including organic food, organic cosmetics, organic gardening and organic stores.

Nutrition Facts.org

It is estimated that North Americans spend in excess of $50 billion annually on diet products and self-help books and videos. However, given that Western society continues to see increased obesity and other “diseases of affluence” such as Type II diabetes, coronary heart disease and certain forms of cancer, much of that money is being wasted. We believe that a significant part of the problem is that individuals who want to make the correct nutritional choices for themselves and their families are faced with a deluge of confusing and conflicting nutritional advice. The goal of this website is to present you with the results of the latest in nutrition and health research, presented in a way that is easy to understand.

Cooking from Scratch to Save Money

written by FitBrits.com
health benefits

Health. Home-cooked food is healthier than convenience meals.
You control what goes into your body. You select the fresh,
organic, seasonal, grassfed or other preferred ingredients.
You measure the oil, salt, sugar and cream in each recipe.
And scratch-cooked meals don’t—by definition—include commercially
processed items. So you’re assured the fat molecules in your
olive oil haven’t been re-arranged in a lab, heated to
Inferno-esque temperatures and injected with dubiously stable
hydrogen. Your sauces, pastas, condiments and desserts aren’t

Cheaper. Unless you shop exclusively at Citarella, you’ll spend far
less buying and preparing your own food than eating take-out and
convenience dishes. And that holds true even if you eat high-end organic,
imported or specialty foods—the restaurant or take-out equivalent
will always cost more. A lot more.
